Homemade Playdough

Making and playing with playdough helps develop both gross and fine motor skills, which are essential for learning to draw and write. It also refines children's sense of touch and stimulates their imagination, creativity, and spatial awareness.

These skills are essential for learning to draw and write. Playing with playdough also refines children's sense of touch and stimulates their imagination, creativity, and spatial awareness.

For playdough to be truly enjoyable, it needs to be soft. Since playdough often dries out quickly, we make our own at Hands for Kids Daycare & After-School Care. This allows us to always provide fresh playdough and choose the colours ourselves. It is also very safe for even the youngest children, as it is made from edible ingredients.

You will need:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • ½ cup of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • 2 cups of boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon of food colouring

Preparation:

  • Mix the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large bowl.
  • Add the oil.
  • Stir the food colouring into the boiling water.
  • Carefully add the coloured water to the dry ingredients.
  • Mix everything well until a dough forms.
  • Once the playdough has cooled down, knead it with your hands until it becomes soft and smooth.

Tip: Store the playdough in an airtight container to keep it fresh and soft for longer.
